The International Institute of Lowell

The International Institute of Lowell, Massachusetts was founded in 1918 as part of the Lowell Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA). Later in 1924, the International Institute of Boston was established. The International Institute separated from the YWCA in 1935 and served immigrants in New England for decades. Their purpose was defined as "to promote the interests and understanding of the foreign-born peoples of greater Lowell; to apply the civic, social and legal resources of said Lowell in the state of Massachusetts to their protection and better orientation." In 1994, the International Institute of New Hampshire opened in Manchester and later in 2001, all three sites consolidated to form the International Institute of New England (IINE), continuing to provide guidance and education to thousands of immigrants and refugees arriving in the United States.
